Castles and sharing

What is a Castle?

A Castle is an encrypted space for accounts.

  • Your private Castle (My Castle) holds the accounts only you can see. It can't be shared or deleted.
  • A shared Castle has its own key. Everyone you invite gets that key sealed to their own account. The server never sees it, and nobody hands over a master password.

Areas (Personal, Family, Work) only sort your Castles into tabs. They never change who can see what. An owner can move a Castle with Castle settings → Move to another area.

Create a shared Castle

  1. Browser extension Choose + New Castle. Android app Tap New shared Castle.
  2. Give it a Name (for example "Family accounts") and pick an Area.
  3. Choose Create shared Castle.

The Free plan includes 1 shared Castle for up to 3 people. Family and Team include unlimited shared Castles. See Plans and billing.

Invite someone

Owners and Castle Admins can invite.

  1. Open the shared Castle and choose Members.
  2. Under Invite someone, enter Their email and choose What they can do: Viewer, Editor or Castle Admin (what each can do).
  3. Choose Save invitation. MoatKey emails them. You can also choose Copy a message to send and text it yourself.

An invitation is open for 7 days. To take it back, choose Cancel invite.

Accept an invitation

  1. Sign in, or create a MoatKey account, with the email address the invitation was sent to. Finish setting up your vault first.
  2. Under Invitations for you, choose Accept (or Decline).
  3. You see your safety number. Compare it with the person who invited you, on a call or in person.

You're added when an owner or admin of the Castle next opens it and confirms you. Until then the Castle won't appear for you.

Add people who accepted

Nobody is added automatically. After someone accepts, an owner or Castle Admin has to confirm them. MoatKey reminds you with Someone accepted an invitation to your Castle and a Review and add button.

  1. Open Members. Under People who accepted, find the person.
  2. Ask them to read their safety number to you on a call or in person, and compare it with the one on your screen (how).
  3. If it matches, choose Numbers match — add them.

You can also choose Add without checking, but then you're trusting that nobody swapped their key on the way. If the setting below is off, this button says Add without comparing.

After someone accepts, an owner or admin has 14 more days to add them. If that runs out, send a new invitation.

"Compare safety numbers before adding people"

This setting is on by default for every shared Castle. It means someone who accepts is added only after an owner or admin confirms their safety number. Only the owner can change it.

  • Browser extension It's on the Members screen and in Castle settings.
  • Android app It's on the Members screen.

Remove someone

  1. Open Members, find them under the people in the Castle, and choose Remove.
  2. Confirm with Remove and change the key (owners) or Remove (Castle Admins). Keep them cancels.

They lose access right away. MoatKey changes the Castle's key so nothing saved from now on can be read with the old one. If a Castle Admin removes someone, the key change happens the next time an owner opens MoatKey.

They may have kept what they already saw. MoatKey shows a checklist of passwords to change at each service.

Nobody can remove the owner. MoatKey doesn't have a "leave Castle" button or an ownership transfer yet.

Delete a shared Castle

Only the owner can do this, and only for shared Castles.

  1. Open Castle settings and choose Delete this Castle….
  2. Type the Castle's name, enter your Master password, and choose Delete for everyone.

Everyone else loses access at once. Its items, invitations, Secure Drop links and activity log are removed and cannot be restored. Make an encrypted backup first if you might need anything.
