Getting started
Last updated October 2, 2026
MoatKey is a password manager for you, and for the accounts your family or team share. This page takes you from install to your first saved login.
1. Install MoatKey
- Android: MoatKey on Google Play.
- Chrome: add MoatKey from the Chrome Web Store. The Microsoft Edge version is in review at Microsoft Edge Add-ons.
You use the same account on every device. Create it once, then sign in everywhere else.
2. Create your account
- Open MoatKey and choose New to MoatKey? Create an account. In the extension's toolbar popup this opens a new tab, so nothing is lost.
- On Create your account, enter your Email, then your Master password twice.
- Choose Create account.
Your master password needs at least 12 characters and must not be easy to guess. If MoatKey says it is too weak, a passphrase of 5 random words works well. More about your master password.
3. Confirm your email
- MoatKey emails you. On Confirm your email, type the 6-digit code into Code from the email and choose Confirm email.
- If the email has a link instead, open it, then come back and sign in with your master password.
- Then choose Sign in and unlock to finish.
No email after a minute? Choose Send a new code and use the newest one. See Troubleshooting.
4. Create your vault
- On Create your vault, you can add Your name (optional). People you share a Castle with see it.
- Choose Create encrypted vault. Your keys are made on your device.
5. Save your Emergency Kit
Next you see Your vault is ready and your Emergency Kit. It holds your Recovery Key, the only way back in if you forget your master password. MoatKey cannot recover your vault without it.
- Browser extension Choose Print or save as PDF or Download as a text file.
- Android app Choose Share or save the kit and save it to Files or print it. Don't send it to Messages, Mail or a note that syncs. You can also write the Recovery Key down.
Tick I printed or saved my Emergency Kit somewhere safe (Android: I saved my Emergency Kit somewhere safe.), then choose Open MoatKey.
6. Your first Castle and your first login
Your accounts live in Castles. Your private Castle, My Castle, holds the accounts only you can see. If you don't have one yet, choose Create My Castle.
- Choose + Add item, then Login.
- Fill in Service name, Username and Password (or choose Generate).
- Choose Encrypt and save.
