Roles, admins and the activity log
Last updated October 2, 2026
The four roles
| Role | What they can do |
|---|---|
| Owner | The person who created the Castle. Everything a Castle Admin can do, plus moving the Castle to another area, deleting it, and changing Compare safety numbers before adding people. Owners sign every change of the Castle's key. |
| Castle Admin | Everything an Editor can do, plus inviting and removing people, adding people who accepted, moving items in and out of the Dungeon, renaming the Castle, Recently deleted and the activity log. |
| Editor | Can use, add and change accounts. |
| Viewer | Can use and copy accounts, but change nothing. Viewers never see items in the Dungeon. |
You choose a role when you invite someone (What they can do). Each Castle has one owner. MoatKey doesn't yet have a button to change someone's role or transfer ownership. To give someone a different role, remove them and invite them again.
The activity log
The activity log shows who did what in a shared Castle, newest first. Only owners and Castle Admins can see it.
- Browser extension Open the Castle and choose Activity, or Castle settings → Open activity.
- Android app Open Castle settings → Open activity.
It records items being added, changed, deleted and restored, people joining and leaving, key changes, Dungeon items being opened or copied, and Secure Drop links. Use Show to filter (Everything, Items, People, Keys, Dungeon, Castle) and Done by to pick a person.
Item names in the log are shown from your device; MoatKey's servers never see them.
Signed key changes
When someone is removed, the Castle gets a new key, and the owner signs that change. If MoatKey ever says a key change is not signed by the owner, don't use that Castle until the owner confirms. MoatKey pauses changes in it until then.
