Import and export

Import passwords

Everything is read on your device. Nothing is uploaded until it's encrypted, and no AI reads it.

Browser extension

  1. Open Tools → Import.
  2. From a password manager export: choose Use the export importer. Export your passwords from Chrome, Edge or Bitwarden, pick the CSV file, then choose Import (the button shows how many accounts it found).
  3. From text or a note: pick the Castle in Import into, paste into Paste your logins and choose Read text, or Or choose a .txt or .csv file. Lines like "Username: …" and "Password: …", or "name | password | site", work. Put a blank line between logins.

Android app

  1. Open the Castle you want to import into, then Settings → Import passwords.
  2. Paste into Paste your logins and choose Read text, or choose From a file (.txt or .csv). A Chrome, Edge or Bitwarden CSV is recognised automatically.

Other CSV files with a password column usually work too. Authenticator keys in a Bitwarden export are imported.

After importing, delete the export file. It contains your passwords in plain text. Empty your Downloads folder and your recycle bin or trash as well.

Make an encrypted backup

  1. Browser extension Tools → Export & backup. Android app Settings → Master password & recovery.
  2. Choose Export an encrypted backup….
  3. Enter your Master password, then a Backup passphrase twice (or choose Suggest a passphrase). It must be different from your master password.
  4. Choose Export encrypted backup. You get a file named like moatkey-encrypted-backup-2026-10-02.json.

Keep the backup passphrase safe. Without it, the backup can't be opened. Dungeon items are included in the encrypted backup, and each export is noted in the activity log.

Restore a backup

  1. Open the Castle you want to restore into.
  2. Browser extension Tools → Export & backup → Restore a backup, pick the Backup file. Android app Settings → Restore from backup → Choose a backup file.
  3. Enter the Backup passphrase, choose Open backup, then Restore (the button shows how many items).

Export a CSV (to move to another password manager)

Browser extension Only in the browser extension: Tools → Export & backup → Export unencrypted CSV.

The CSV file holds every password and authenticator key in plain text. Anyone or any program that reads it gets all of them.

  • Import it into the other password manager straight away, then delete it and empty your recycle bin or trash.
  • Never email it, sync it to a cloud drive, or open it in Excel or Google Sheets.
  • For a backup, use the encrypted backup instead.

To confirm, type PLAIN TEXT and choose Save unencrypted CSV. The file is in Bitwarden's format, which Bitwarden, Proton Pass, 1Password and MoatKey can import. Items in the Dungeon are left out of the CSV.
